Hi,

I've never owned a VW camper but would love to get my hands on one to use for camping (what else!)

I assume I'm correct in saying they're not in production any longer but what would be the newest one to get hold of?

Can anyone recommend any good places to look? and what might I pay for one in good nick?

Cheers

Simon

Hi - best idea is to get along to a VW show and start chatting to owners and traders about what to look out for, what types of conversions might best suit you etc.
split screens went up until 1967, bay windows til about 1980? (then T25s T4s etc) but they had a couple of changes along the way, 68 - 71/72 had low front indicators and curvey bumpers, after that high indicators and square bumpers.
original campers had windows in body set into the panels - panel vans that have been modified are cut into flat panels so not 'inset'

tons to learn about all the types so best to get as much info as you can before buying £3000 - £4000 should get you a solid decent camper...
a cheaper van that may need some work might be a good buy (or cost a lot more in the long run!)

good question - i saw the early pics of the concept a couple of years ago, but not heard when it'll be released... someone may know?

it'll be overpriced (like new bettle originally) as it has the 'style factor' with it, i've not seen anything rcently about it... mabe they aren't going to bother anymore?

The article was dated April 14th, 2003 so I think you're probably right :(

The same thing happens in the bike world a lot - probably elements of the styling will filter down to production and the unseen mechanical almost certainly will. How long was it between design sketches of the the New Beetle and production of the car?

I believe it's not happening.

If you are thinking of getting a T4 Transporter, have a look here:
