My starter on a 1984 Westfalia Camper has two heavy gauge 12volt wires attached to the threaded connector (held on with a 13mm nut). One of the wires has a "normal" crimped on lug. The other has some sort of brass tube like fitting that slides over the threaded connector. What I need to know is either where to find starters with the extra long connection needed to satisfy both the lug and brass fitting...or...can I replace the brass fitting with a suitable (high amerage) crimp on lug and use a normal starter? Forgive any grammer errors. I am from the other side of the pond where we have slightly modified the language.

Hiya LTBeck41,
You can easily get away with replacing the "tube" connector with a suitable crimp lug (or in the solonoid's case a suitable male spade connector).
The most common problem with starter motors on all Beetles (type 1), Early campervans (type 2 t1), bay window campervans (type 2 t2), Vanagons (type 2 t3), Karmann Ghias (type 3) and Variants (type 4) is corroded connectors. These are usually the spade connector that connects up to the +ve side of the solonoid (this is what happened to my 1973 Beetle when it refused to even spin the starter motor).
I hope this helps.
