Hi, newbie to this forum and would be glad of any suggestions!...our '72 westy has lost reverse...had a recon box fitted back in march and has been running fine, took a wrong turn at the end of our holiday last week so had to back up to turn around, put it in reverse and nothing happened..tried again, still nothing!, the gearstick feels like it is in the right position, it is not difficult to get into gear but the van appears like it is in neutral!...gears 1-4 are fine, drove 300 miles home from holiday okay, just can't reverse...we weren't experiencing any problems before this happened that we were aware of, it just lost the reverse gear, could a linkage problem cause this?, we had adjusted the linkage a few years ago (previous to this gbox) as it was difficult to get into 1st but this time it goes into all gear selections okay - anybody suggest any reason & solution for this? thanks!!

That sounds like a horrible problem! :( I can't offer any suggestions I'm afraid - if the other gears feel right and engage smoothly and positively it would seem that the adjustment is correct.

You say it is a recon box - I am wondering if something has come disconnected inside which engages the reverse gear  Just a possibility but would be a fairly hefty job to find out. Sorry I can't help but hope you get it sorted soon :)

Might be worth taking a look under the gear stick, undo the 2 bolts which hold it to the cab floor after marking the position of the base and there is a metal plate under the gear stick.

It should be a kind of oval shaped plate with a hole in the middle for the bottom of the gear shifter to go through. On the edge of the middle bit there should be a bit that slopes either up or down, I can't remember which. This slopey bit is what helps get it into reverse so may be damaged.

If nothing else it's something cheap easy to check. Stick a picture up if you're not sure if it's ok.

Hope this helps

Probably a bit late but loosen two bolts on plate at bottom of gear stick with gear lever in neutral.
With slightly loosened bolts put into second gear.
Tighten bolts but not too tight and then put into neutral and try all gears- If you can get reverse it was just adjustment.

This link may be of help.
