I've got a 1970 bay with 1600 single port, std carb, Monza 4 tip. I'm looking for some advice on what I should do to get more power. I'm quite happy to cruise at 60 mph but would like to be able to hold the speed on A road hills and also be able to overtake occasionally. If I bought a twin carb and sports exhaust, how much difference will it make? Does anyone have any experience of upgraded engines such as SSP 1641's and 1776's - how much difference would an engine like this make in a camper and how thirsty are they?

Thanks in advance.

I have a 1776 in my 1970 camper and it will go up hills no problem. I cruises at 60-65 all day long. As for fuel I would rather have a bit more go in my van :D
The 1776 will not put you back in your seat(in a camper)

Cheers

Thanks for the offer mate, however I don't think I'll be able to go to Vanfest. I'll be at the Woolacombe show at the end of September though - are you going to that?

I'd say change the pipe for instant results, only ever found a power drop with a monza

Get a single quiet pack exhaust or a Bluebird stainless one if you can afford it

Second step, there was a nikki carb for single ports , not a bad conversion, check some swapmeets

1641 have cooling issues and you're only looking at a few Hp over 1584, 1776 will need some casing mods as the barrel spigots are wider

What he said. I ran a monza for two years and it was a bag of pants all farting and banging get rid matey.

The go for a 4 into 1 merged header dead easy to fit and either a quiet pack or a stinger.

Ok well maybe not a stinger. I have twin weber about to go into mine when I can get round to it or fit twin 36 Dells.

If you really want to improve the performance though a a dead cheap fix is bin all the interior and just carry round a two man tent and a 1 season sleeping bag.

:D
