Engine Trouble req help

Hi there new to all this camper van stuff. But am mechanical minded. Have a 1.6 1973 petrol air cooled camper. Although at the moment little ill was running fine then went to start and now coughs and splutters , does not idle and back fires. I'm Guessing it could be points plugs or timing but have no idea on what the timing should be or the points gap. is there any other things i should be aware of first. Do you know where i could get a good manual from or a little data info many thank people

Get yourself a copy of the Haynes Manual-VW1600 Transporter 1968 to 1979. Very comprehensive. Have a look at www.justkampers.co.uk More info over there and they sell various manuals including the Haynes.
