Hi, im not a camper guy (yet!) but iam into my vw's (golfs mainly) but i have a quick question, a friend of mines grandad has a 1970 something (k reg) bay window, 1.6/1.7 , AUTOMATIC, it is in reasonable nick, unrestored, bit of body work rust but seems relatively sound underneath. He is 87 and is thinking of selling it cos he cant drive anymore due to eyesight probs.

anyone able to help with a ball park figure as i have no idea? mk1 or 2 golfs yeah, but not campers!
also is the auto rare or naff or what?
thanks in advance for any help

I drove an Auto Bay once. Really nice to drive.
I think the clutch's are hard to come by though, I know someone with an Auto 1303, needs a new clutch, if anyone knows of one!

Sounds like a reasonable bus, but it probably still needs more than you think spending on it to MOT it!
The Auto is considered 'rare', and could be a nice bonus, but equally a pain to maintain. Many people would probably just change it to manual when it breaks, hence Auto's get rarer!
But obviously best kept original at all costs.

If the chassis rails, sills, and gutter's are not rotten, why not offer £1k-2k if you think it's worth it.

REAL local bus prices, rather than current VW scene prices!!

I had a Golf Driver and a Jetta GTI!
Currently looking for a 5speed gearbox to fit 89Polo C!

thanks for you reply mrsherbie! its got nearly 11 months mot to run, is taxed (free) and drives, the gearbox is nice and smooth bit weird tho cos im used to a manual, and other than some surface rust and some window corners seems sound. he keeps it in a garage and drove it regularly upto aboput 5 weeks ago. went to the l;ake district in it over the summer. only major thing i could see was the interior wasnt in great nick but other than that looked ok!

Oh, It sound's really nice!

Buy it! Buy it!

Have you asked him how much he would like for it? If it's cheap, add a bit, then you are both happy!:D
After looking after it so well all these years, I'm sure he will be really happy to see it go to a loving home!:p

What colour is it anyway?

The wonders of bbs.

As I didn't get a reply I assumed that it had gone and have now bought a 1970 Dormobile.

I have a couple of friends searching too, send a PM with a contact number and I'll pass them on.

Where is the van ?
