Hi
I've been driving dubs (in watercooled mk2 golf gti form) for about 10years now and have always taken an interest in the aircooled scene. I've fancied a camper for years now and have decided that now might be the time. Although I would love a bay window T2 I don't think my finances would stretch to the amount needed for a solid example with MOT. I'm therefore considering the possibility of a T25 (camper or minibus for conversion) as I'm handy with a spanner but not with a welder. I thought if I really do get on with camper life maybe I could commit a bit more money to it in a couple of years and go for the T2 then.

I therefore have a few questions:

1) Is there a favoured T25 model i.e. are some years much better than others?
2) Which is the better option out of the diesel or petrol engines?
3) Are they all aircooled or watercooled?
4) Are there any major weaknesses I should look out for?

Also I was wondering how much to expect to pay for insurance, I'm using my no claims on my daily driver so will have to start from scratch on the van, I'm 29yrs old, I have 3points and had a claim last year, I live in the cambridge area. I tried a few online quotes and they were all coming back at about £750-800 this was a lot more than I expected for a low performance van. Is this a realistic amount?

Ah questions, questions!
All replies much apprieciated

Cheers
Toby

i drive a 1.6diesel wedge panelvan, i'm 30 no noclaims £300, thats with the coop, panel vans are realy hard to insure as its a commersial vehicle.
ithink the early petrol ones were aircooled and the rest are water pumpers.
the diesel engines are like rocking horse **** to get hold of and i had to adapt one out of a golf to fit.
