hi all, new to the world of air-cooled (long standing VW water-cooled chap though). Have just acquired an early (72) 1600 Bay, and would greatly appreciate some assistance please. Basically, 90% of the time she drives fine, however as soon as she warms up and the choke is 'off', she tends to stall when I pull up in traffic etc. Driving along is fine and normal, it's only when coming to a stop she will do this. Occasionally also when just idling the revs will drop away to nothing. I have used the limited knowledge I have acquired so far to increase the richness and raise the idle speed, which has helped, but it still happens at the most in opportune moments. Any advice would be much appreciated......

...as very secondary issues, how much should I expect to be charged for the fitting of a new battery tray, and how easy is it to fit new springs to a Devon pop-top? Sorry about all the questions, but I'm thirsty for knowledge!!! My major concern is the first problem, stalling!

Does it stall all the time, or just when cold?

If when cold its the carb icing problem. Caused by coked up heater riser pipes. You could remove them and decoke them, or fit a IDMU jacket that keeps the inlet manifold warm (bless) and solves the problem. Either that or develop a neat 'heel and toe' system of keeping the revs up.
If its any other time, then Id suggest a good tune up, for starters, and ensure all electrical and hose connections are fitted.

Battery trays? Depends how far it goes ..... Just the tray is easy and should be no more than £50, but it depends what there is to weld to. Difficult to judge unsighted, Im afraid, but a simple task in the scheme of things.

No idea on the springs, soz.

Carb Freezing IS common. Also see my post at Stalling engines (http://www.volkswagencamper.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=252&highlight=heater)
