what engine LT 31

Hello, as a new member, this is my 1st post. I have just bought a VW LT 31 (1990) with a 2.4ltr straight six diesel engine. I got it relatively cheap because there is a problem with the engine. The thermostat overheated leaking water, causing the engine to seize.

As i know virtually nothing about engines and expecting the worse, my questions are.......
What other engine will fit into this van ?
Do i need to look for the same engine to replace the existing one ?

It would be interesting to find out what other engine you could find to put in this car. Would you not just be easier going to the local scrap yard and seeing if they have a engine in ok repair that would be easier to fix than the one you ahve? They are useful guys and will sually give you some top tips.
