I have a water cooled VW Camper Van registered in April 1985 (engine code DG). When the engine is warm were should the temperature gauge be pointing, on mine it goes to about three quarters, just passed the small red warning light. Is this normal ?
When I start the engine from cold the temperature gauge raises quickly to the said point, then stays there, if I leave it running for quite some time the radiator fan comes on (good), I have good heat out put from the inside cab heater system.
I have had a new thermostat fitted because the temperature gauge was not working at all.
Any information would be gratefully received.
Yours sincerely,

I have a 2.1 DJ engined Caravelle. The temperature guage rarely gets any higher than the warning light on mine. It sometimes goes just above the warning light when I`m stuck in traffic and thats about the only time that I hear the fan kick in. Hope that helps but I suspect all vans are slightly different.

Thanks very much for the info, I'm going to try and bleed the system one more time and see if that makes a difference.
Thanks a gain,
Andrew

Be sure that you bleed the system correctly with the front of the van approximately 18 inches higher than the back. :D
