camper van purchase advice

Hi, I am looking into purchasing a campervan but am really starting from scratch. My wife and I would like to travel around the UK and Europe on weekend trips as well as week trips. Think we would like a 1980's van with a pop up top. What are all the models VW makes? I know of Westfalia, camper and that is about it. Are there others? Heard thru the grapevine the deisel lacked power. Wanted to confirm this or not. Engine size seems to range from 1600cc -2100cc. Any info or preference on this? That is about all. Thanks for any help.
