View Full Version : Camper Novice Seeks Help
I wonder if you guys can give me some advice.
I'm looking to purchase a camper in the spring and am starting to do a wee bit of research into what I should look for. My dad used to have an old Type 2 (I think) many years ago and it was great but I'm really not sure what I should go for.
Ideally my requirement are, to be within a budget of £2-3k and I want something fairly economical (but not massively under-powered) and with the ability to sleep 4 adults as comfortably as possible - should I be thinking T2 or T25 (whatever they mean?!!!) and should I be looking for any specific variants (Devon / Westfaila........etc)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Michael.
Forgot to say - also keen to know if anyone can recommend any independent garages in Scotland of maintenance / servicing etc once I have bought a camper.
Thanks,
Michael.
Try and go for the £3000 mark - and look at several! I bought mine for £3700 and it's really worth about £2500 (I've learnt a lot in a year!), mine needs a new front beam now (previous owner 'hid' the rust ander a plate he tak-welded over the rust) not very honest, I should have had an expert opinion first but it was spring and i was in a hurry to buy a van! Doh! :(
For £3000 you should be able to get a solid van without many corrosion problems, get a trained pair of eyes to look over it first - there's so many things to think of that it's best to get help on viewing!
the T2's are both the split screen vans, pre 1969 and the bay-window vans - '69 to 1980, with air-cooled engines typically 1600 (about 50 bhp?) good for most roads in UK, but will struggle on steep hills - just have to select a low gear!
the T25 is the 80's van with a more boxy look to it, generally have water-cooled engines but not sure on details - web searches for T25 info should give this info.
If you can - have a look at different conversions to see which suits you.

Think in the region of double (bay) or treble (split) what you have to spend :D
Scotland = John Forbes, Edinburgh (mechanical stuff), PFP Coachworks, newtongrange (bodywork) - these guys cost but know their stuff!
Vans cost money, Vans cost money, Vans cost money, Vans cost money!
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

dream on if you think you will get a solid van for £3000! nonsense!
splits do not struggle on steep hills, reduction boxes and a truck gearbox means they will pull and pull and pull, just not at a high speed! thats not struggling its doing the job the way it was mean to be done back in the day! different pace that all! :p
dream on if you think you will get a solid van for £3000
You can find solid Bays for £3k easily.
