engine noise - appreciate some advice

Hi all

I have a 1984 transporter. Intermittently (although it is now getting more regular) there is a whining/screeching noise coming from the enigine - happens mainly when changing gears and stays for a while (a few seconds) - but is now getting worse.

Any advice on what this may be? Always cautious of going to garages with a "there is a noise ..." enquiry. They see me a mile off and start loading up the invoice!

If its prominent when cold or on start up then it could be a loose fan belt.

2 minute job. :)
