Hello,

I just bought a 1971 bay. On the 3.5hour ride home it unfortunatly overheated and started firing on 2 cylinders. I've just stripped the engine and found the head has cracked between 3+4. Looking at 1+2 It's ok but I'm not 100% convinced it's not on its way. So I've decided to bite the bullet and order a full unleaded rebuild kit from just campers. Speaking to a mate today he has told me I should have bought a 1642 piston and barrel set and got some extra power as I'm replacing both anyway. Does anyone know what this envolves and is it worth it. It's not to late to cancel my order. Is it possible? What are the down sides?

Some advise Please

Andy

No, stick to your guns.
Many say that the thinner walls of a 1641 are not man enough to push along the weight of a bus.
Im not sure, but I would say that the power gain will be minimal, and without additional 'bolt on' work such as light flywheel, uprated ignition, carb(s) and fancy pants exhaust, then it wouldnt be worth it.
At this point in your life, I stick to the 1600, get it running nicely and enjoy it for what it is.

I tend to agree with Mike, I went with the 1641 in a bay once caused me nothing but trouble .... I tend to stick to near to stock now.

Yep I agree too! No point in building your engine with oversize barrels without uprating everything else. It's a bit like buying 2000 watt speakers for your five watt transistor radio!

I agree with the rest - go for the original.

I shelled out on a Vege replacement last year when my 1800 started throwing litres of oil everywhere (it's time had come) as opposed to a rebuild.

It has not missed a beat with over 1k put on it.
