We have a combi related question.

There is a small 5-10 mm hole under the dashboard made of metal. It is electrical like a cigarette lighter holding. However the cigarette lighter is next door so cant be that. We are trying to work out what its for.

Its on the same circuit as the lighter.

Its got a small 3-4 mm round coil type thing deep inside the hole. I'll take a photo if you need to look at it.

Does anyone have any clue

I can only think that it is some sort of auxillary socket which may have been installed by a previous owner, maybe for a piece of equipment they wanted to use. I know that Westfalia had their own rather perculiar sized power sockets on the dash, but it sounds far too small for that. A photo may help, but other than that I can only guess.

At least it's got you thinking!!

Its in the facia of the dashboard right underneath the glove box.

I'll get a photo when i get the chance.

Anyone else have a clue?

It was for an air compressor. Some models did not have the space for a full size spare tire and used a small temporary support tire that bolted on next to the flat tire.

That socket is a standard 12V power socket that is generally regarded as giving a much better connection than the more widely available cigar-lighter sockets.

At work we get hold of these plugs from companies such as RS (www.rswww.com) or farnell (www.farnell.co.uk) (search for "DIN ISO 4165" - this is the name of the connector style or "automotive connector") and both companies supply connectors that can be converted plugged into both these DIN sockets and the cigar lighter sockets for about £3 each.
