View Full Version : Great mag shame about the price
A neighbour has just lent me some back issues of VW Camper & Commercial. Great read and without doubt the best publication of it's kind but what's with the price
I can already hear the usual responses about subscription levels, cost of ink these days, my van needs a new turbo etc. but surely you would get a much higher readership If it was nearer the price of the other VDub publications or was available in WHS etc.
Shame really as it's a damn good read. :p

well you can always save 60p and buy Volksworld instead and get about 6 pages of bus stuff

I think the magazine is excellent value for money and deserves the support of all VW van owners. You must remember that the mag is targeted on a very specific corner of the market. It probably isn`t economically viable to put it on every newsagents shelf. You`re not Scottish or Jewish by any chance, are you, Gary ?? :D

I think that the mag at the moment is good value for money and it is nice to see such a specific magazine for our interests and not like some of the mags around padded out with boring articles or those of little or no relevance or interest. However, should it ever become a monthly magazine, then I would like to see a substantial discount for a year's subscription. :D
Best mag I've seen in ages :)

Dave you must be talking trade prices, the differences is more like £1.20. however that appears to be one off copies. Just checked the subscription prices and they are waaaay more reasonable (even cheap!)
Beetlecrusher, no to both but I have spent £500 on the bus over the past two months.

And to think I made avatars bigger for you
VolksWorld £3.35 Camper & Commercial £3.95 - Difference 60p quite a simple equation really
Bus Pages - VolksWorld 6 Camper & Commercial ALL 72 PAGES OF IT! - Difference 66 pages (yet another simple equation)
Numerous factors for this, far too many to mention and to be quite honest not really worth mentioning here. £3.95 is in our opinion and the 1,000's that subscribe to it, amounts to good value for money for this quality specialist publication.
Like David says VolksWorld awaits, and hope you enjoy it! :D
Oh and why not use their forum.... exactly ;)

Gary, just joking about your nationality. I`ve just put my bus through the annual torment of an M.O.T. and it passed without a large financial outlay. I still think the mag is great value though.
Wow, you guys are tetchy
This months VolksWorld £3.45
Taken from your own link (http://www.volkswagencamper.co.uk/latest_issue.htm) this months C&C £4.65 incl. P&P. Now I maybe wrong but thats a £1.20 differnece.
I've already stated that the mag is the best on the market and I will be subscribing in the next day or two oh and that subscription prices are significantly cheaper than buying one offs.. Jeez
Maybe I should go somewhere where people are a little less anal :p
There is something ironic about this thread, and many other on Camper websites, that highlight the reluctance to shell out on stuff.
A quid too much for a magazine, £5 to get into a show, cups of (show) tea in excess of a pound ... the list goes on.
These are people who run about in overpriced to buy, uneconomical to run and frankly hideously costly to repair or maintain vehicles.
Hardly bastions of financial commonsense, really.

True - but good fun all the same
:D and if spending money on fun things makes you enjoy your life more then that's got to be good :) :)

You've got a point there.. :)
Sad that this should be my first post on the site, but that's the first topic that stood out.
How can you compare a shelf price (already delivered to a shelf) with a through the post price (which needs to go ...through the post). The phrase "includes P&P" kind of implies that there is an element of cost to the price which is devoted to getting it through the post. You must ignore that when comparing. You must know that when comparing anything you must compare like for like.
So is a difference of 60p really worth mentioning?
To take the like for like thing to its extreme, you can't compare a bus and camper specialist publication with a generic one anyway. If you're only interested in campers and commercials, then volksworld is terribly overpriced for its content compared to this publication. Knock of P&P, divide the price by the number of pages of C&C content in both publications, and then see which comes out proportionally more expensive.

I just wonder how long it will be before campers and commercial gets like volksworld as in , repeats of the same camper that was built in issue one turning up in issue 10 only rebuilt by someone else  Thats when ill be saying bye bye to it :( I want fresh ideas based on fresh vans not fresh paint on an old issue van i read volksworld alot before and now i dont i find campers and co, much better but for how long i dunno ,as for price id have to say ive never known even a comic to come down in price  You either pay the price to read or you dont ....frankly sooner or later its going to be so much that its not viable or pleasurable to do so ...just my opion :o

Don't Worry about that Mr Pooh, there are far too many vans out there with ideas/restos just getting better and better that David will luckily have new vans to feature for years to come.... Cheers for your thoughts though. :)
p.s. Sorry if it should be Miss Pooh? ;)
I thought the price was quite good. In the current market any specialised publication like this is good if it comes in at under £5. And as I'm assuming that VWC&C is quarterly it is a damn good price. ;)

I bought C and C at Vanpest ;) and althogh it has fewer pages than V/World and others - the pages of totally relevent material (ie a camper) rather than something you'll never own exceed that of the rivals - not filled with rucks of ads for overpriced so called VW garage specialists (having just crawled out of the woodwork) which makes it good value page for page...
...this praise for a Jazz publication comes as a surprise for me - as 'happenings in the past' left me with a rather bad taste - vowing to never psuh my ££ your way. You have however, by virtue of the written word (and thats what it should all be about) won me over :)
Well done Mr Eccles :)

I aim to please :)
saw enough buses at Vanfest to fil the mag for years to come!
You people really have no idea!
I have just renewed my subscription for 9 issues at a cost of £56.
My point?
I have emigrated to New Zealand with an excahnge rate so poor and a salary so much lower than I used to earn that each mag is costing something like you paying £10.
That's after paying £1000's to bring my bus out here and finding that I can't get it on the road legally without having a full resto done!
Each copy of Volksworld mag here costs $16.
So do me a favour stop your moaning ;)

i must admit to bieng a bit suprised to find that the editor would be so arrogant to suggest this.tho not an unfair point.the thing is that for me (and i am sure many others)buying mags is more of an on the spur of the moment type thing.if i'm in the mood i may pop into smiths and do just as you say and buy volksworld.i came onto this site thinking of buying your mag but am off put by the price,(i could have two copies of autocar pretty much for this-no bus stuff but a regular buy for me)for delivery of a single issue.not only that but it would or could take upto 28 days for delivery.as i dont wish to subscribe(having never read your mag before, how do i know weather i will like it?)
hi ho off to smiths i go......

arrogant? hmmm .. realistic I think. basically you make your choices and pay your money.....
one of the reasons why TVW and Dubscene went down was because of impulse sales....without regular buyes a ***le gets into problems with print run costs (unless you are some mega huge Murdoch enterprise)
Volksworld is good at what it does - the ***le says it all. We serve a special interest market and cater for those who want more about buses and living with them....
we are at many shows so you can always buy a single copy and see if it mets your needs
oh .... and it does not take 28 days to arrive BTW as the office process and post things out very quickly...
enjoy Smiths....

You are representing a 'percentage' of buyers. 'Spur of the moment', ie. Will buy the magazine with the cover that grab's your attention the most in Smith's this month.
Because, VW magazine's are your 'extra' magazines, not your absolute favorites.
There are also a percentage who will religiously buy their VW magazine's first, without question/any interest in the price, and then wander into Smith's for their 'extra' magazine's, maybe, hmm, Classic Military Vehicle Magazine.... :o
I have no idea what my VW magazine's cost. Or the price of my 'additional's' each month. You either want to read it enough you just buy it, or you don't. I have bought Autocar on rare occasions .
I am very pleased with my new issue of C&C! And as long as I don't see any rust appearing on it's pages ~ I have enough of my own to deal with ~ I don't want to pay to see other people's:rolleyes:
(Sorry, I hate grass root's style ;))
I will continue to buy it.

repeats of the same camper that was built in issue one turning up in issue 10 only rebuilt by someone else  Thats when ill be saying bye bye to it :( I want fresh ideas based on fresh vans not fresh paint on an old issue van
Personally, I find it really interesting to see buses I liked and read about 10+ years ago, turning up in fresh new clothes.
You are very lucky if your resto-paint job makes it past 10 years without blistering out somewhere, especially with a UK RHD. Therefore it's obvious that some VW's will get re-restored every 10-20years. They are all getting so much older!
Sad that nothing can ever reproduce the lasting quality of an original VW factory paintjob......sigh... :o
What does it matter what the registration number of a van is?
If its been repainted, restyled, reengineered enough to warrent a second feature, then thats great.
As Ive said, a few quid every quarter is absolute buttons in the world of bus ownership, its not even a can of petrol, is it?

I've never regularly bought any of the publications, but have to admit I'll be subscribing to this mag in the new year. It's the only one of all the different types that I've opened and wanted to read cover to cover. Well done guys and I have no problem with the little bit extra, it's well worth it. :D

New to the forum but needed to comment on this thread
The C&C is in my opinion the best mage for VW buses out there
If anyone has the audacity to quibble about the price you shoudl really take a step back...its a good price for a good magazine
I dont particulary want to read about hot rod VWs in USA ...nice shiny pics but doesn't really turn me on
However articles about T25s being driven from Washington State to Buenos Aires ...Now there you have an amazing story ...Thats the last back issue I bought and the articel alone was well worth the money
So guys keep up the good work
The only downside was that the mag was once the feature publication on have I got news for you ...which kind of gives it that geeky quality hahahaha
Is there any better praise for a specialist magazine
Would be iteresyted to hear your thoughts on the new magazine being published by JK and Volksworld for campers...

What can be said?
Catering for the perceived masses and/or cashing in on a healthy craze?
Just read the Volksworld 2003 (I think) Vanfest article, where they stated that it was the first Vanfest they'd actually attended themselves.
Coat tails anyone? ;)
